Class 10th Science NCERT Chapter-14 Sources of Energy Solutions (Solved In-text and Exercise Questions)

Q1.
A solar water heater cannot be used to get hot water on
        (a) a sunny day
        (b) a cloudy day
        (c) a hot day
        (d) a windy day

Ans. (b) a cloudy day

Q2. Which of the following is not an example of a bio-mass energy source?
        (a) wood
        (b) gobar-gas
        (c) nuclear energy
        (d) coal

Ans. (c) nuclear energy

Q3. Most of the sources of energy we use represent stored solar energy. Which of the following is not ultimately derived from the Sun’s energy?
        (a) geothermal energy
        (b) wind energy
        (c) nuclear energy
        (d) bio mass

Ans. (c) nuclear energy

Q4. Compare and contrast fossil fuels and the Sun as direct sources of energy.

Ans. Fossil fuels are non-renewable sources of energy. These fuels were formed from remains of dead plants and animals over millions of years ago and there are only limited reserves of them. These fuels can only be used once as they are non-renewable sources of energy. Burning fossil fuels has other disadvantages too. Air pollution is caused by the burning of coal or petroleum products. The oxides of carbon, nitrogen, and sulphur that are released on burning fossil fuels are acidic. These lead to acid rain which affects our water and soil resources. In addition to the problem of air pollution, recall the green-house effect of gases like carbon dioxide.

Sun is the source of solar energy, Solar energy is a renewable source of energy as it can be used again and again. Solar Energy is obtained from the radiation of the sun and these radiations were converted into the useful form of energy with the help of solar panels. The advantage of using solar energy is, it is a renewable source of energy and it can be used again, and again, it does not cause air pollution.

Q5. Compare and contrast bio-mass and hydroelectricity as sources of energy.

Ans. Fuels which are products of plant and animal remains are called bio-mass. These fuels do not produce much heat on burning and a lot of smoke is given out when they are burnt. Therefore, technological inputs to improve the efficiency of these fuels are necessary. Wood and Gobar gas are the example of bio-mass.

Hydroelectricity is obtained from the kinetic energy of flowing water or the potential energy of water at a height. Waterfalls are the natural way of producing hydroelectricity but these are limited. to overcome the shortage of waterfalls, dams, and reservoirs are created. Water in the dam is carried through pipes on the turbines of the generator which transforms mechanical energy into electric energy.

Bio-mass and Hydroelectricity both are Renewable sources of energy and can be obtained repeatedly from nature.

Q6. What are the limitations of extracting energy from -
        (a) the winds
        (b) waves
        (c) tides

Ans. (a) The winds: Limitations of wind energy are:
  1. Windmills require airspeed of at least 15km/h to  maintain the required speed of  turbines
  2. It requires a huge area of land to set up a windmill farm. A farm of 2  Hectares is required to set up a 1MW Generator windmill farm.
  3. Since the tower and blades are exposed to the vagaries of nature like rain, sun, storm, and cyclone, they need a high level of maintenance.
(b) Waves: Limitations of wave energy are:
  1. It can only be set at a location where strong waves form.
  2. High-quality equipment is required to withstand weather conditions.
(c) Tides: Limitations of tidal energy are:
  1. Tidal power plants construction cost is very high.
  2. To obtain tidal energy, the tides should be very strong.
  3. It needs a specific location to set up a Tidal power plant.

Q7. On what basis would you classify energy sources as
        (a) renewable and non-renewable?
        (b) exhaustible and inexhaustible?

Ans. (a) Renewable and  No-renewable:
Renewable sources of energy are those which can be used continuously because of their availability. These resources are available in nature for a  long time.
Solar energy, tidal energy, biomass, wave energy, and wind energy are examples of renewable sources of energy.

Non-renewable sources of energy are those which cannot be generated again and these are available in a limited quantity.
Petroleum, natural gas, and coal are examples of non-renewable sources of energy.

(b) exhaustible and inexhaustible:
Sources that will get depleted after some years are known as Exhaustible sources of energy.
For example Petroleum and coal.

Sources which do not get deplete and available in huge amount in nature are known as inexhaustible sources of energy.
For example solar energy and wind energy.

Q8. What are the qualities of an ideal source of energy?

Ans. Qualities of an ideal source of energy are:
    1. An ideal source of energy should be available easily.
    2. It should produce a huge amount of energy when burnt.
    3. It should be economical to the users pocket.
    4. It should be safe to store.
    5. And easy to handle and transport.
    6. An ideal source of energy should not cause Pollution. It should be safe for the environment.

Q9. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using a solar cooker? Are there places where solar cookers would have limited utility?

Ans. The solar cooker is a device which is used to cook food with the help of solar energy. Its construction is very simple, it is a  box which is painted black from inside and have a glass cover at the top to trap the heat. There are some advantages and disadvantages of a solar cooker which are discussed below.

Advantages of solar cooker:
  1. Solar energy is the source of energy for solar cooker and it is available in abundance.
  2. It is economical to the user's pocket.
  3. A solar cooker is safe to use, there is no risk of failure due to high pressure like pressure cookers.
Disadvantages of Solar cooker:
  1. It doesn't work in bad weather conditions.
  2. It is a time-consuming process to cook in a solar cooker as compared to Gas stoves and ovens.
Yes, the places where sunlight doesn't reach on a daily basis have limited utility of solar cooker.

Q10. What are the environmental consequences of the increasing demand for energy? What steps would you suggest to reduce energy consumption?

Ans. Demand for energy is increasing as the population of human is increasing. Energy is demanded by humans for their day to day needs, petroleum is required for transportation, electricity is needed for daily use appliances and other fossil fuels for industrial energy demand. But the fossil fuels are non-renewable and cant be used again and also after some years they will finish, and also produce pollution, increasing demand for energy is disturbing nature and creating pollution and greenhouse effect causing global warming.

There are  many ways in which we can save fuels and the environment,
  1. We can save water and electricity by stopping the unnecessary use of these resources.
  2. We should use public transport or carpooling to reduce the use of petroleum.
  3. Reduce the use of fossil fuels by accepting their alternative renewable sources of energy.
  4. And we should take care of our flora and fauna for a healthy ecosystem and environment.

WHY SHOULD WE PREFER E-BOOKS OVER PAPER BOOKS??

E-Books are the latest and the smartest form of Books which have many advantages over paper books. It doesn't take space in your cupboard, it can be stored for a long period without any damages to them, etc.

But the main reason we want to discuss "why should E-Books will be preferred??" is that they are Environment friendly.

Using E-Books reduces the demand for Paper Books which directly leads to less cutting of trees and indirectly somehow Protects the environment.

So, we request you to use more E-books than paper books. And share this message with your Friends and Family too.
